As more and more RPG games hit the Xbox, how they differentiate
themselves will be key. Well, Bethesda Softworks, the renowned
developers of Morrowind fame, look to have found a pearl (a black
pearl to be exact) with their sea faring adventure, Pirates of the
Caribbean. Originally, this title was being developed as a
successor to the Sea Dogs PC game, but with the release of the
blockbuster motion picture of the same name, Pirates of the
Caribbean the RPG was born. We recently had the opportunity to sit
down with the latest build of the game, and, “Ayeee. We be likin’
what we see, mateeee!”

LucasArts has a lot of games coming out over the course of this
next year, and one by the name of Armed and Dangerous
stands out. If you haven?t heard of it yet, you will no doubt be
hearing more as it nears completion. This zany third-person action
game focuses around Roman, a criminal mastermind, and his
sidekicks that include a Scottish mole miner, a snobby droid with
a liking for tea, and sage with a serious case of head trauma.
Sound unique? You betcha! The story revolves around Roman and his
crew as they attempt to overthrow a tyrant king. The
less-than-likely heroes battle the king?s forces (which can number
in the thousands on screen) to free the land from his rule?think
Robin Hood.

What Side of the Force Are You On?
Creating a game set in the Star Wars universe brings a lot of high
expectations. For the most part, gamers have been fortunate that
LucasArts maintains lofty goals for their Star Wars titles. While
a few less than stellar SW titles have been released, you can
literally count them on one hand. Now take all that pressure and
multiply it ten fold and you may be in the range of what is
expected of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Being that
Knights of the Old Republic (KoTOR) is the very first RPG based in
the Star Wars universe, LucasArts wasn’t going to let just any
developer take the reigns. But where to find a team to take on
such a daunting task? Japan, land of the RPG you say? Nope. How
about Edmonton, Alberta? Canada might not initially come to mind
when discussing RPG developers, but it should. Ever heard of a
company called BioWare? Chances are you have. Just take a look
around your room and find that copy of Neverwinter Nights or
Baldur’s Gate.
